Concrete Durability Technology


Durability is the ability to last a long time without significant deterioration. A durable material helps the environment by conserving resources and reducing waste and the environmental impacts of repair and replacement. Construction and demolition waste contribute to solid waste going to landfills. The production of new building materials depletes natural resources and can produce air and water pollution.

Durability of concrete may be defined as the ability of concrete to resist weathering action, chemical attack, and abrasion while maintaining its desired engineering properties. Different concretes require different degrees of durability depending on the exposure environment and properties desired. For example, concrete exposed to tidal seawater will have different requirements than an indoor concrete floor.

Concrete which is impermeable is a key link to greater durability. Impermeable concrete helps to protect the steel reinforcements from aggressive chemicals that may cause it to deteriorate or corrode and eventually lead to the degradation of concrete.

The Xypex’s Admix C 5000 was designed with a purpose as a Concrete Durability Enhancing additive for reinforced concrete exposed to aggressive conditions. By controlling permeability being the key link to greater durability, the long term structural integrity, protective capacity and aesthetic qualities of the concrete. Preventing the penetration of aggressive chemicals, Xypex Admix C 5000 helps control the problems of sulphate attack, leaching, alkaline aggregate reaction, carbonation and corrosion caused by chloride ingress to reinforce concrete.

  • Xypex Admix C 5000 is a powdered admixture consisting of Portland cement and various active proprietary chemicals.
  • Active chemicals react with the calcium silicate hydrates in a catalytic reaction which generates a non soluble crystalline formation throughout the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete.
  • The reaction products of Xypex Admix C 5000 are in mineral crystal form which prevents the penetration of deleterious ions into ordinary Portland cement concrete, fly ash concrete and slag concrete.
